The Skype for Business for Windows Phone app brings Skype for Business presence, instant messaging (IM), and voice and video calling to Windows mobile devices. Users with Lync 2013 will either get the updated app automatically or be prompted to update it manually, depending on their user settings. New users can download it from the Windows Phone Marketplace. The Skype for Business for Windows Phone app is only available on Windows Phone 8.1 and later.
Before directing users in your organization to download the app, you'll want to run the following tests to make sure it is properly integrated into your environment.
Install Skype for Business Windows Phone 8.1
Browse to Windows Phone 8 update central to update your phone to Windows Phone 8.1.
From your phone, go to the Store, and search for Skype for Business.
Tap Install.
Sign in to Skype for Business for the first time
On the Start screen, swipe left to view your installed apps, search for Skype for Business for Windows Phone, and then tap the icon to open the app.
Enter your sign-in address (for example, user@domain.com) and password, and then tap Done.
You may be asked for both a user name and a sign-in address. The user name is what you use to sign in to your organization's network, either user@domain.com or domainusername.
On the Customer Experience Improvement Program screen, tap Join to send anonymous data about app issues and usage to Microsoft, or No thanks if you prefer not to participate.
On the Never Miss Your Work Calls screen, enter your mobile number with country and region codes. When Skype for Business for Windows Phone can't use a Wi-Fi or cellular data network to make an audio or video call, you'll be automatically called at this number and connected to the audio portion of the call.
Tap Next and review the notification and phonebook access settings:
Push notifications Get an alert when you receive a new IM or call. Normally On (recommended).
Important
If you turn this setting off, you won't be notified of IMs, calls, or other Skype for Business for Windows Phone alerts unless the app is active.
Allow phonebook access Search for contacts on your mobile phone when you search for contacts in Skype for Business for Windows Phone.
Tap Next to start using Skype for Business for Windows Phone.
Verify mobile client installation
After you configure the client and sign in successfully, use the following tests to verify that your installation of Skype for Business for Windows Phone is working correctly on your mobile device.
Search for a contact in the corporate directory
In the Contacts list, tap Search.
Search for a contact that exists only in the global address list.
Verify that the contact name appears in the search results.
Test instant messaging and presence
In the Contacts list, tap a contact.
In the contact card, tap the instant messaging (IM) icon.
Verify that an IM window appears and that you can type and send an IM.
Test dial-out conferencing
In Outlook, schedule a Skype for Business meeting.
On your Windows Phone, open the meeting invitation.
Click the link in the meeting to join.
Answer the call from the conference service and verify that you are connected to meeting audio.

Select two different user accounts for this test.
On user A's Windows Phone, sign in to Skype for Business for Windows Phone with user A's account.
Open another application on the device.
On a different client, such as the desktop client, sign in to Skype for Business with user B's account.
Send an IM from user B to user A.
Verify that the IM notification appears on user A's mobile device.
Remove Skype for Business from your Windows Phone
To remove the Skype for Business for Windows Phone app from your mobile device:
From the start screen, swipe to see the application list.
Tap and hold the Skype for Business for Windows Phone application, and then select Uninstall.
Back in February, I wrote:
Three more weeks of working Skype for Windows Phone... and then it's Windows 10 Mobile or nothing. Microsoft's Skype team has been saying for a while that the changeover from a peer-to-peer architecture to a 'cloud' system, with all communications managed from Microsoft's servers, is almost done, and it seems that the inevitable final switch is to be thrown in about three weeks time. And with the switch away from the old architecture, the old Skype client on (the almost as old) Windows Phone 8.1 will stop working.
This has now happened, albeit slightly later than planned.
Signing in is now not possible under Windows Phone 8.1, so the switch has definitely been thrown at Microsoft's end - finally; (right) curiously, Skype is still showing in the Windows Phone 8.1 Store, though presumably at some point someone at Microsoft will spot this and remove or disable it?
If you have an older Windows Phone - a Lumia 520, 620, 630/635 (512MB RAM model), 820, 920, 925, or 1020 are the main possibilities here - then you're out of luck in terms of Skype from now on*. Mind you, as I've said previously:
And returning to my theme above, anyone with a 2012/2013 Windows Phone 8.1-only phone (i.e. can't be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile and UWP compatibility) can't really complain that one of the Internet services on the phone stops working 4-5 years later. In the mobile world, that's an eternity. And 99% of those Windows mobile users who use Skype day to day will definitely be on a UWP-capable device by 'early 2017'.
And indeed, anything bought from about mid-2014 onwards (so in the last three years) should be capable of running Windows 10 Mobile, so the unavailability of Skype on the old OS might well be the kick you need to finally do the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade. Yes, there are a few 8.1-only features that you'll miss, but Skype will work again in its new UWP (Universal Windows Platform) guise and what's more, you'll gain access to a hundred other shiny new UWP applications and a much wider ecosystem generally. Go for it!

PS. If you're already signed in to Skype on a Windows Phone 8.1 device then it may still work for a short time, but don't sign out or power off the phone, etc!!

PPS. This isn't the only online service to stop working for Windows Phone 8.1 and to provide an appropriate kick up the backside for people to upgrade their phones or OS - UK peeps have had iPlayer stop working recently - and again there is no issue under Windows 10 Mobile.
